About The Event

Unveiling and honoring the Davis-Jones-Waters families, the Unkechaug Nation memorializes the lives of a Native American family whose lives were almost erased from history. During the late 1800s, Native American assimilation was rampant. School officials forced the children of Native American tribes to assimilate into American culture, tearing apart families and homes. Two young brothers, Charles Edward Jones and Harry Jefferson Jones, endured this era of separation, disease, and injustice. When they ran away from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, many schools responsible for forced assimilation, they arrived home with tuberculosis. Through the research of author and genealogist Donna Barron, their stories are finally brought to life, forever remembered through one of the most erased eras of American history. Please read the flyer for further information. All are welcome.
