Spirits Alive | Began May 2005
Mr. C. Ballenas, a teacher at the school, created a social studies program called the Historical Wax Museum project. He wanted the youth of today to meet the challenges of the future by remembering the roots of the past, and sought to bring it to the entire community. With the help of Linda Mayo Perez, former president of Maple Grove, a unique community event called Celebrating the Living Spirit was created in 2004.
In 2005 the name of the event was changed to Spirits Alive. Spirits Alive has become a popular community event, and we are delighted to continue this annual tradition.

Murder Mystery Dinner | Began
October/November 2013
The Maple Grove Murder Mystery was born at Maple Grove Cemetery from a simple but daring idea, to have a mystery dinner at a unique setting, a cemetery. We believed that this was the first time anywhere such an event had been conceived within a cemetery setting. From the beginning, it was decided that nothing about the experience would be borrowed or secondhand. Each script was original, inspired by the lives and legends of notable denizens resting at Maple Grove. With a cemetery then approaching its 150th year, the writers were gifted a rare luxury, time itself. This allowed mysteries to unfold across eras such as a Victorian Egyptian Mummy Mystery, a Day at the Horse Races, a crackling Radio Mystery, a Civil War Mystery, etc. and more, each steeped in the customs and curiosities of its age. After dinner plates were cleared and conversation softened, the hall lights would dim. Beyond the windows, lanterns flickered to life and moved closer and closer. Then the French doors would slowly open, and through them would process figures from the past. Historical characters in period costume, stepping out of history and into the mystery. What followed was a lively exchange between audience and actors: questions posed, clues revealed, suspicions stirred. Together, the living and the long departed unraveled the tale, until at last the mystery was solved. It was history brought to life, theater wrapped in tradition, and an evening unlike any other! An event as memorable as it was singular, and quite possibly one of a kind in the world.

Trunk or Treat | Began 2014
Trunk or Treat is a community event that provides a safe, family friendly alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Organized by the Friends of Maple Grove, the program was initiated in 2014 and began with a small number of participating vehicles. Over the years it has expanded significantly, drawing an increasing number of volunteer participants and decorated vehicles. In recent years, the event has also received sponsorship support from Ponce Bank, helping to sustain and expand the program. The event takes place within a gated section of Maple Grove Cemetery, providing a secure environment that is free from vehicular traffic. The cemetery’s landscaped grounds offer a calm and controlled setting well suited for families with young children. Community volunteers participate by decorating their vehicles and distributing candy and treats directly from their open trunks. Children move safely from car to car, engaging with volunteers in a structured and supervised atmosphere. Maple Grove Cemetery is the only cemetery known to offer an event of this type for the benefit of the surrounding community. There is no admission fee for Trunk or Treat. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned or dry food donations, which are collected and distributed to local food pantries. This component allows the event to serve both as a family activity and a food drive supporting those in need. The program typically concludes with the presentation of an award for Best Decorated Car, recognizing volunteer creativity and engagement.

Día de Los Muertos | Began November 2023
DÃa de Los Muertos at Maple Grove Cemetery began in 2023 as an educational and community-based remembrance initiative inspired by the cultural traditions of Day of the Dead. Hosted each November by the Maple Grove Cemetery Association with the help of the Friends of Maple Grove, the program invites visitors to honor loved ones through a traditional ofrenda altar featuring photographs, symbolic offerings, student artwork, and culturally significant elements. What started as a modest single altar display has grown steadily each year, expanding in scale, participation, and programming. The observance now includes a month-long installation, educational components with local schools, artist-designed altars, live music, and community ceremonies. DÃa de Los Muertos at Maple Grove continues to grow annually, reflecting the cemetery’s commitment to cultural inclusion, education, and meaningful remembrance for the diverse communities it serves.

Tea Parties | Began 2011
Our Tea events celebrate Maple Grove's historical connections from the time the cemetery was founded in 1875. Each Tea features a different theme relating to an era or historical location such as the Edwardian Tea, 1950s Tea or the Ellis Island Tea. We hope you enjoy this photo collection from these past Tea events from 2011 to the present.
