Victorian Hat Making Workshop

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

Friends of Maple Grove held a Victorian Hat Making Workshop honoring the Victorian History of Maple Grove Cemetery, on Saturday, May 10, 2014.

We had our first super incredible Victorian Hat Making Workshop sponsored by the Friends of Maple Grove honoring the Victorian History of Maple Grove Cemetery. The workshop took place at the historic 1880 Victorian Administration Building and was led by Friends of Maple Grove Board Member Helen Day.

The participants started with a wide brim straw hat base. They were then given a large Whitney Museum bag which they filled with items to be used for their hat. They had to sort through lace, fabric, ribbons, tassels and feathers as they designed their Victorian Hat. The items mentioned, including the bag from the Whitney Museum, were generously provided by The Material for the Arts! Thank you MFTA!!!!

Using hot glue guns or needle and thread the creations started to evolve. It was a very enjoyable experience and included a wonderful pot luck lunch enjoyed by all.

By the end of the day many beautiful Victorian styled hats were modeled by the participants.

Thank you all for making our first Victorian Hat Making Workshop a phenomenal success.
